• Mandatory ABS requirements for goods vehicles over 12 tonnes will come into effect on new type approvals from October 1996 and new registra tions in October 1998.
Introductory dates for vehicles of 7.5 to 12 tonnes will be April 1998 for type approvals and Aril 2000 on new registrations. Goods vehicles of 3.5-7.5 tonnes will be required to have ABS fitted for new type approvals from April 1999, and new registrations from April 2001.
Trailers of 3.5-5.0 tonnes, and 5.0 tonnes-plus, will also have to meet the mandatory ABS require ments. For trailers over 5.0 tonnes type approval is manda
tory from April 1 998, with new registrations having to comply from April 2000.
Trailers of 3.5-5.0 tonnes will need to meet the April 1999 and April 2001 deadlines.
For passenger vehicles from 5 to 12 tonnes, and 12 tonnes plus, ABS will be mandatory for type approval from April 1998 and on new registrations in April 2000 for both weight categories.
While some LGV legislation comes as the result of a knee-jerk
safety reaction, the speed of implementation of ABS on LGVs and lighter goods vehicles is, according to Burnet, moving Forward at a sensible pace, with the vehicle and braking manufacturers consulted From an early stage.
