• A proposal to restrict designated London roads to those who can afford to pay tolls has been rejected by Transport Secretary Paul Channon.
The question of charging motorists and hauliers heavily for the use of London's roads was raised in a Commons de bate earlier this week when Mrs Ray Michie MP (Argyll and Bute, SLD) asked Channo for his view on a consultants' report calling for a network of new toll roads. Channon said that none of the consultants' ideas had received the Govern ment's blessing.
