• The UK road haulage industry could lose out to European competitors unless the Government spends more on improving Britain's roads, warns Road Haulage Association director-general Freddie Plaskett.
In a study entitled Britain's Roads, Plaskett warns that the whole economy will be damaged by road congestion. He is calling for a Department of Transport task force to define and monitor a 15 to 20 year programme for national and local road improvements. The group should include road-user organisations, local authorities and environmental, regional and industrial interests, says Plaskett.
The study also recommends modernising roads leading to commercial ports, upgrading the Al to motorway standard; an East Anglian motorway link, and a dual-carriageway between Sheffield and Manchester in the North.
