PROTESTS from coach drivers and operators caught in spot checks by DTp enforcement officers have shown that there is a general lack of awareness in the industry on the requirements of the EEC drivers hours regulations which came into force on July 1.
Coastal resorts are often the venue for routine spot checks on psv vehicles and, a DTp spokesman said, this year the requirement for drivers hours log books has been included in the check.
Many owner-drivers and small operators have not received any instructions on drivers hours since January and are not totally aware of the requirement.
Some operators find drivers baffled with the laws and one operator was reported to be using tachographs at night and log books during the day to get drivers hours twice as long.
