Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

his was the biggest shotlist in the competition; the standard was exceptionally high and the final decisio , which lay between two eties, took one hour to re lye. Indeed, it almost cane down to a decision batd on the quality of the pri ts — but not quite — before the winner was declared. In time-honoured fashio1 , the judges named their fin I selection in reverse order.

In fourth place were United Bis its with "P-p-p-pick up a . • . It was bright, jolly and entert ining, it told the story. But the back door said nothing, so foll wing drivers would not get the message and useful space had been ignored.

I equal third place came We tabix and Hadfield Paints. The Weetabix entry came close but as spoiled, said the panel, by he introduction of a white ban front and rear. The concep was good, they said, becau e it was not a "billboard-.

The Hadfield entry justmis ed the target because, in the judges' opinion, the gra hics were not placed as well as hey might have been and alth ugh the colours were bold, the were insensitive. The blue og on the cab front was tho ght to be out of sympathy wit the rest of the scheme.

he Gordon's Gin vehicle and the RHM -Bisto Kids' livery au ed the headache. They both told the story and they were both well conceived; they were almest identical in -every way. The difference lay in the colaur ng. The Gordon's white label on the bottle and the white

ground were "not quite in rd". The border on the

van was "a picture e". The rear view of the ion's green bottle was b". The RHM kids were nd". The Gordon's cab d have blended better with olive green bottle. The ts were so fine.

They are joint winners," the panel. "Sorry," we "you must pick an outright er." Back they went for her session. Still they ed and then, without ence to the entries, they ed on their criteria to find winner. It should show g use of graphics, be con bac 3CC RH `ra So "dr "b1 he Doi

ceptional, put over an atmosphere of excitement and should not be boring.

The winner, they said, was sparkling and friendly — it was the RHM Bisto Kids. If the Gordon's Gin livery had shown the product at the dispensing or consumption stage, the panel would have retired once more in search of the ice buckets.

Fourteen other entries received judges' commendations. They were Alpen, ARC, Associated British Malts, British Gas Corp (SE Region), Carsons Sunway, Ford & Slater, International Paint, Lakeland Plastics, MFI, Marshalls Chunky Chicken, Mayhew, Quinton Farms and Weetabix.

The winners being members of the FTA also win the first award from the Association.
