PROTOTYPE 12m (40ft) lg special semi-trailer has en built by the Primrose ird Axle Co Ltd, Blackburn, r the transport of liquid brine.
Operator the Mond Division ICI Ltd asked for several Mules to be incorporated iniding a customised version the Primrose platform unider travelling gantry crane. Le semi-trailer, basically a imrose APT32 design, has en modified to stow transrsely 13 drums of two indard lengths but of the me diameter, weighing beten 28 and 30cwt when full. The gantry crane has suf:lent clearance to pick out y particular drum (and unid it, a necessary feature), as Ly combination of the difrent sizes can be expected in given load, and they are not !cessarily loaded in drop order.
Individual drums, cradled in triangular steel chocks welded to the main members of the trailer, are secured by screw clamps over the end rims.
Extra safety is provided by sections of motorway crash barrier bolted together along each side as a protection against side impact. A Norde Featherbed rubber spring tandem-axle bogie is said to provide a well-cushioned ride, while at the front end Nugearmatic air-operated landing gear is fitted. Lift and transverse motions of the crane are operated by hydraulic rams in conjunction with pulleys and wire ropes.
The standard grab has been replaced by one of more compact dimensions weighing about 2cwt to accommodate the overhead clearance requirement.
