E BRITISH Association of ner Drivers took a further p forward last weekend en its steering committee d its first meeting at icklpy, Leicestershire.
rince its formation on April ,he Association has been rking towards establishing Lational identity, national icies, and a general eading of the stronger nches' work to the newer as.
'he steering committee has nwri to 21 members folring the co-option of Geoff tson (North Humberside), Wood (North Humberside), Cain (Thames Valley), .gie Faulder (Lincolnshire I South Humberside), orge Maunder (North Wesn), Brian Townley (North st rri, Jeff Chamberlain oft Western), Tom Baize (East Midlands), and iy Bail (Bradford and Dist). North Humberside's yellow badge, incorporating Strength is Unity as its motto, has been adopted as the BAOD emblem for display on all members' offside lorry doors.
Some branches are unhappy .about the potentially inflammatory effect of the motto upon some trade union members.
The differently-constituted Sheerness Hauliers Association already has its own badge and seems unlikely to wish to use the BAOD badge also.
Bob Wilkins, an insurance consultant associated with the North Western Owner Drivers' Association, advised steering committee members of the benefits of properly negotiated insurance arrangements.
In his view, owner-drivers ought to be rerated for driving and for sickness benefits. At present, they are rated at the same levels as employed drivers, yet they were more likely to treat their vehicles with respect as they had to pay for any repairs.
"It is time insurance companies woke up to this," he said.
Mr Wilkins also emphasised that area associations should advise prospective members of tangible benefits available through membership. His association produces lists showing tyre discounts, fuel discounts, and other benefits available.
George Kelly of the original North Humberside Association said: "We issue a list to all our members, showing people who give discounts, and give them a star rating."
Owner drivers who are interested in contacting an association or forming their own group should contact the News Editor, Commercial Motor, Dorset House Stamford Street, London SE1 9LU.
