Opposition Likely by 12 Local Authorities in Northumberland
TERN opposition is now certain tsDfrom local public authorities in Northumberland to the proposed ruling of the Northern Area Traffic Commissioners to ban the issue of weekly unliunited-travel tickets by all concerns running services into Newcastle, and on certain other routes, except by Newcastle Corporation.
The councils, 12 in number, regarding the proposal as bringing about an unwarrantable increase in fares, have decided to brief counsel to make representations to the Commissioners. The authorities participating in this joint move are Blyth, Tynemouth, Earsdon, Longbenton, Bedlington, Ashington, Seghill, Seaton Delaval, Weetslade, Newbiggin, W ailsend and Whitley and Monkseaton.
Proposed new charges for 12-journey and 24-journey tickets, which are suggested as substitutes for the present unlimited-travel tickets, and comparative -figures of the present scale are :North Shields to Newcastle: 4s. 6d. for 12 journeys, and 9s. for 24, to be increased to 6s. and 12s. North Shields to Whitley Bay : 2s. for 12 journeys and 4s. for 24 journeys, to be increased to
3s. and 6s. Tynemouth and Newcastle: 5s. for 12 journeys and 10s. for 24, to be increased to 6s. 9d. and 13s. 6d.
North Shields to Backworth: 2s. Gil. unlimited to be increased to 3s. 9d. for 12 and 7s. 6d. for 24-journey tickets ; Blyth to Newcastle : 5s. 6d. unlimited to be increased to 9s. for 12 and 18s. for 24-journey tickets; Seaton Delaval to Newcastle : 5s. unlimited to be increased to 6s. 9d. for 12 and 13s. 6d. for 24 journeys ; Backworth to Newcastle : 4s. unlimited to be increased to 5s. 3d. for 12 and 10s. 6d. for 24-journey tickets; Blyth to Morpeth : 5s. unlimited to be increased to 6s. 9d. for 12 and 13s. 6d. for 24-journey tickets.
