1 986: First cases of ME in the UK herd come to light.

1988: Measures to stamp out the disease are introduced, including a ban on using cattle by-products in feed.

1992: The B5E outbreak reaches its peak with 36,000 confirmed cases.

March 1996: The beef export ban is introduced.

June 1998: The Florence Agreement between the EC and the UK sets out five pre-conditions for lifting the ban.

November 1998: The beef export ban is lifted by the EU, subject to conditions.

February 1999: Legislation is due in Parliament allowing exports to resume, on condition that agreed measures are in place.

2001: The MAAF expects BSE to be eradicated from the UK herd.
