• Ryder Truck Rental, the big US vehicle hire company now establishing itself in Britain, on Tuesday wrote to the Freight Transport Association supporting its proposal that firms which hire out goods vehicles without drivers should be licensed (CM last week).
Ryder's view is that it is the clear responsibility of anyone who hires out, leases or rents vehicles to see that they comply in every respect with the requirements of the Construction and Use Regulations and that, on being hired, their maintenance condition is such that they are able to pass any inspection at a goods vehicle testing station.
The company says it would welcome a licensing scheme which would protect customers, other road users and the public against poorly serviced goodS vehicles operated under rental or hire agreements.
