English is bemoaning the lack of service areas on the M25. "The busiest motorway in the country has only three service areas. If you're heading west from the Dartford crossing it's a long way to the next service area after Clacket Lane, with Fleet services 47 miles away and Reading services 56 miles away. Both should be within reach of a driver with more than one hour driving time left, but often it can take two hours to reach Reading services."

He is also perplexed about the need to give his drivers more holiday. "I'm still thinking of ways to introduce the five extra days' holiday entitlement I have to give along with five more next year! Holiday pay is based on basic hours only (no overtime or night-out allowance), so my drivers will be down by about £200 next year and a further £200 the following year and my costs will be up covering the holidays."

Meanwhile, livestock owneroperator Denis Fuller has the pleasant problem of deciding whether to expand the operation. "The question is the purchase of a second lorry and finding a driver. It would make coping with the work easier and hopefully increase my turnover but there's finding a driver, paying wages, and buying, insuring and maintaining the lorry."
