Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A 25% jump in the sales of panel vans helped to boost total CV sales by 10% during the first month of 1987 — but sales of trucks and artics above 3.5-tonnes GVW fell by 2.5% to 4,303.

According to the latest registration figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, the importers market share fell by nearly 4%. Discussions about Leyland Truck's sale to either Daf or Paccar have not harmed LT's sales figures. It took first place in the truck and artic sector during January, selling 761 vehicles. Its 17.7% share was enough to case it ahead of the combined sales of Ford, lveco and Iveco Ford Truck, which fell back to second place with a 16.3% share (705 trucks).

Mercedes-Benz further consolidated its third place position with a 28% sales jump in January, compared with 1986. It now has a 14.9% stake, based on sales of 643 trucks. Volvo moved into fourth position last month with an 11.5% share (487 trucks), ahead of Renault/Dodge with a 9.2% share (399).

After suffering from a lack of new Transit models in January 1986, Ford has come back with a vengeance in the panel van sector up to 3.5tonnes GVW.

Its January 1987 sales jumped by a massive 106% compared to last year. It now has a dominating 45% share at the top, based on sales of 4,945 vans.

Freight Rover's sales also went up last month, helping it keep its second place position with a 12.9% share (1,384). Bedford's panel van sales, however, are down again which is reflected in its reduced third place share of 7.9% (869).

In the car-derived van sector (up 1.5% in January), Ford also took the number one slot with a 36.2% share (3,081 vans). Bedford fell back slightly with its share down to 23.8% (2,025). Third-placed Austin Rover still has some more catching up to do.
