SMALL BUSINESSES • FIM Customs and Excise has appointed independent consultant KMG Thomson McLintock to consider the requirement that small businesses should retain all VAT records for six years, and to review the information currently held on tax records.

The aim of the review is to assess the burden of VAT record keeping and to see whether it can be reduced. The review is scheduled to last until the end of May 1987. KMG Thomson McLintock (01920 9111) will be meeting trade bodies and a number of small businesses during the course of its review.
