• Following its recent decision to concentrate more on dedicated contract, rather than third party general distribution, United Transport Distribution has sold its loss-making depot on the Longthwaite Grange Industrial Estate at South Kirkby, near Pontefract, to Onward Transport.

The sale involves some i!80,000 worth of fixed assets, but more importantly it also includes the transfer of 15 vehicles, eight trailers and 31 demountable bodies on lease, which Pontefract-based Onward will take over running. The South Kirkby depot employs 47 people and has been sold as a going concern. Among the customer business transferred with the sale is distribution work for Quaker and Aican.

Ian Ramsay, managing director of Onward Transport says his company plans to expand its distribution business in addition to its current primary transport operations, which employ 100 artic units.

Onward intends to use the South Kirkby depot to develop its involvement in regional distribution in Yorkshire, the North-West, the North-East and surrounding areas.
