A THOROUGH PROBE into the state of the motor vehicle industry — including commercial vehicle builders and ancillary firms is now under way by a Select Committee of MPs.

At its first meeting last week the sub-committee of the Commons Expenditure Committee claimed its inquiry would be the most detailed and wide ranging probe for years.

Mr Pat Duffy, MP for Sheffield Attercliffe, chairman of the sub-Committee, said its initial intention was to study the increasing Government involvement and assistance to the industry.

But events had caused them to widen the investigation.

"We will be interested in its organization, economic significance, efficiency, productivity, labour relations and also in comparisons with motor industries abroad, as well as the investment of public money in an industry now in the grip of its worst-ever crisis," Mr Duffy said in an opening statement.

The committee will take oral evidence at weekly sessions until late June or July and report shortly after that.

But in view of the rapidly developing situation in the industry the committee would be prepared to report at any stage on any aspect of the subject.

The committee will also take written evidence from all sectors of the industry and individuals.
