ages in other areas, hauliers sometimes get asked to undertake essentially "local" jobs far from their base. Are they entitled to include a travelling charge for this, on top of the job rate?
AThere is no hard and fast rule about this.
It is a matter for negotiation when the job is being discussed with the customer. You may be interested to know, however, that the roads and bridges committee has recommended to the Westmorland County Council that a travelling time allowance, additional to normal haulage rates, should be paid in such cases. The county surveyor has reported increasing difficulty in local hire of vehicles and has therefore been hiring farther afield. The practice of paying such an allowance in the West Riding of Yorkshire was advanced by one haulier as a reason for such a payment by Westmorland.
The Westmorland committee has recommended payment for time to and from base, with a maximum of half an hour a day for round trips of up to 10 miles, and half an hour extra for each additional half-hour or part thereof.
