* Pioneer collection
I suppose all transport men know the important role played by the Queen Mary trailer, manufactured by Taskers, in the Battle of Britain; these units collected the remnants of repairable aircraft and helped Fighter Command's numbers to be kept up. Now I see that a Queen Mary complete with a wartime Spitfire Mark 9 is among the items in the "Taskers collection" which is being auctioned by Christies at the Taskers Works at Andover on February 22. The sale, which begins at 11 a.m., includes steam engines, road rollers and early agricultural machinery.
It is perhaps not generally known that Taskers played a very important part in the early days of mechanized transport and among the collection are some well preserved examples of the products the company built before becoming engrossed in the manufacture of trailers. This auction marks the passing of the last historic collection of transport equipment to be owned by a manufacturer in the UK, and I gather that some urgent moves are being made by preservationists who wish to see the collection kept together.
Catalogues of the auction are available from Christie, Manson and Woods, 8 King Street, St. James's, London, SW1, price 12s. Admission to the sale will be by catalogue only.
