for farmers in the Staffordshire area is for lime to be delivered in paper sacks and spread by manual labour. Now, however, a new service has been instituted, in which the lime is spread by mechanical methods, and it is claimed that the cost per ton is less than the cost of the sacks.

The company responsible for this development is Pioneer Lime Spreaders, Ltd., Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent, a subsidiary concern of R. P. Hickman and Co., Tempest Street, Wolverhampton. The machinery for the lime-spreading consists of three conveyor-belt rnechani cal spreaders attached to a Fordson Major track-laying tractor, which was supplied by Messrs. Reginald Tildesley, of Willenhall.

The lime is collected from quarries in Derbyshire and Wenlock by the company's own fleet of lorries, which consists of three Bedfords, a Dodge.and an oil-engined Thornycroft. Delivery is made direct to farmers in Staffordshire and Shropshire and spread on all types of arable and pasture land. Even during the bad weather of the past month, operations have continued and the company has been spreading lime at the rate of 60 tons per day.
