the introduction of the long-awaited 1733S 4 x 2 rigid chassis and tractive units, and the 2433S three-axled tractors. The 1733 fills the gap left by the demise of the 1633 tractor.
Air-to-air charge-cooling, originally applied to Mercedes' vee-eight engines, is now specified with the 11-litre vee-six 0M441LA units, rated at 249kW (338hp) at 2,100rpm (to EC88/195). The vee six appeared on the Continent with the powerliner last year: this is its first use in right-hand-drive vehicles. Low-speed pulling power is enhanced by a high torque output of 1,365Nm (1,006lbft) at 1,000-1,600rpm. With its six cylinders set at 90° the engine unit is compact and weighs just 720kg. Unlike previous installations, a single turbocharger, mounted centrally above the flywheel housing, feeds both hanks of cylinders.
