FROM A SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT THE transport committee of the 1 European Parliament (the " House of Commons" of the European Economic Community) is to meet the American Interstate Commerce Commission in Luxemburg on January 15 next. The I.C.C. is the body which co-Ordinates the Federal and State control of road trans port in the United States. '
' This -could wellbe a very significant occasion. •It is, indeed, the first meeting .between the tw(i bodies--whose airns appear to many observers to have much in common, with regard to transport policy. The occasion is politically important purely as an occasion, •but it is equally important from the practical angle because Many' of the problems arising within the E.E.C. in its search for a common transport policy are similar to
those the T.C.C. had to face when establishing the American transport setup.
In a paper to the Institute of Transport in London last month (The Commercial Motor, November 16), Brig. A. E. M. Walter, chairman of the transport policy committee of the European Conference of Ministers of Traniport, suggested that a study of the evolution Of the American system would throw a lot of light on possible developments within the E.EC., in its search' for a common transport policy.
Brig. Walter is to read his paper again on December 18, at the Gas Development Centre in Ivlanchester, when the N.W. section of the Institute meets at 6,15 pm.
