Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE conditions which have a bearing on the operation of motor vehicles in municipal service in this country have their counterpart in many countries overseas, particularly where the system of public health administration has been well developed. It is not surprising, therefore, that certain types of British vehicle and appliance that are largely used by local authorities In Great Britain are equally popular

abroad. • Tit fact, some models which meet the requirements of home users need little, if any, modification to satisfy the demands of overseas municipalities. This is clearly substantiated by the accompanying illustration which shows a type of Karrier refuse-collecting vehicle largely used in this country, and of which the Colombo Municipal Council has recently ordered four from Karrier Motors, Ltd.. Huddersfield.

The picture is of the first of the batch to be completed. As will be seen, the vehicle is -equipped with a tipping body, which is of steel construction and has a capacity of 200 cubic feet. The body,is 11 ft. long, 6 ft. 5 ins, wide, and 2 ft. 5 ins, deep at the sides, but is deeper in the centre, along which a longitudinal housing is fixed between front and rear ends. This housing encases the spring roller covers (three on each side), which are used to enclose the top of the body and so prevent the refuse from being scattered in the air while it is being transported to the destrnetor works.

The tipping gear is of the

hydraulic pattern, and it enables a full load to be easily and quickly discharged through the side-hinged doors at the rear ; these open to the full width of the body and are secured top and bottom -by hand screws. As the body is pivoted at the extreme rear of the Chassis, a tipping angle of 45 degrees can be obtained.

The chassis used in this vehicle is the makers' CL-type low loader with a 13 ft. wheelbase, which, even with full-size road wheels carrying 720 turn. by 100 ram. solid tyres, enables the loading. line to be kept clown to a height of 4 ft. 5 ins, from ground level-a convenient height for discharging refuse from shoulder level.

The chassis is built to carry 50 cwt. loads and is equipped with a 30-40 h.p. four-cylinder engine, and a feature of the design is that the drop of the frame behind the dashboard is staggered. This permits the brake lever to be carried in its normal position, gives the full advantage of a low frame level, and secures a better distribution of the bending stresses imposed by cranking the frame. The frame members are also cranked in the form of a U below the rear axle, and at this point channel section liners are used for reinforcing the structure and, in conjunction with suitably placed crossmembers, they give great strength. The frame is further stiffened by the addition of brackets at each side of the cranked U portion already referred to.
