A TRUCK DRIVER has spoken of his horror after discovering that a 10-year-old boy had died after falling from the back of his lorry.
German national Matthias Krause and his wife, Komelia, were delivering for Lidl in Newport, South Wales, when they stopped to ask for directions, a coroner's inquest heard.
Unknown to the couple, three boys had scrambled into the back of his truck for a dare.
Two of the boys were able to jump to safety but one, Jordan Widdall-Hughes didn't. He fell and was killed. The couple, who were unaware of the accident at the time, were only traced later by police. Mr Krause said in evidence he was "horrified, shocked and surprised" when he was told what had happened.
Newport coroner David Bowen, recording a verdict of accidental death, said no blame could be attached to Mr Krause.
He said: "Even though a sense of adventure is a part of growing up, parents should stress to their children that jumping on moving vehicles is unacceptable, dangerous and potentially fatal."
