Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Heavy hauliers will be spared the wasted hours of waiting for police escorts from the beginning of next year, when they can choose to use a private escort firm instead.

The Association of Chief Police Officers and the DfT are currentiy developing a system of accreditation for the private service providers. But the Heavy Transport Association is concerned that self-escorting services for abnormal loads are developing haphazardly without any central control or direction, because of the lack of common policy from police forces.

Some forces have already abandoned the provision of police escorts, except for special order loads, and actively encourage self escorting. The HTA is encouraging its members to set up their own self-escorting services.

Gloucestershire operator John Golding of John Golding Heavy Haulage has provided his own escort vehicle for the past two years. The system has worked well with the Avon and Somerset Police, but it is a bit of a mess and we need some nationwide consistency." He welcomes nationwide escorting, as it will speed up journey times.

The HTA is calling for stringent standards for self-escorting vehicles, with requirements for equipment like roof bars with warning beacons.
