Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• TUG has been accused of burying news of the closure of its depot in Paisley at a time when most people's attention was focused on the heatwave.

Last week 51 staff, including 27 drivers, were told that the depot in Clark Street will close by Christmas with the loss of more than 50 jobs. Drivers claim the news came out of the blue.

In its official statement, TUG said: "The TUG site at Clark Street, Paisley has been purchased for development and is anticipated to close in December 2003. Distribution will be managed from within the existing TOG network, with alternative warehousing facilities available at Mossond."

The consultation process is expected to last until November when the company hopes to offer most staff alternative positions within TUG.

Hugh Henry, MSP for Paisley South, has promised to contact both TOG and Scottish Enterprise Renfrewshire to find out more about the reasons for the closure—and whether anything can be done to save jobs.

The T&G is currently involved in talks about the situation at local level.

A senior T&G union source told CM it reminded him of the Jo Moore affair, in that the release of the bad news came during a quiet period when most people are away from their desks. Jo Moore, the special adviser to former Transport Secretary Stephen Byers, hit the headlines in the aftermath of the 11 September terrorist attacks, when she sent an email saying it was "a good day to bury bad news".
