Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• All the paint manufacturers are moving towards coating systems that will allow distributors or paintshops to mix a wider range of coatings by adjusting the amount of hardener, thinner and so on in the mix. So they will be able to use the same mixing system to produce both a compliant 2K and non-compliant 2K.

Paint manufacturers are doing their best to help paintshops adapt to the forthcoming changes. For example, HMG has introduced a versatile primer called Rapidbuild, which allows paintshops to use the same primer for a variety ofjobs simply by mixing it with a different curing agent.

Later this year, Standox is introducing a new paint system for commercial vehicles and vans called Standoileet. It will replace the 2K high-solids

MASON Compactlack paint currently SuparTham. on the market. Standoffeet S2000 Bil& comprises about 20 different pastes which can produce about 6,500 mixing formulae and 20,000 colour references. Medium-solids and high-solids

paint can be mixed from the.same paint system. With Standofleet, the same colour is achieved, regardless of whether the coat is medium-solids or high-solids because the binders themselves are colourless and the mixing pastes are the same.

Waterborne primers and base coats are already well establIshed—Standox has had a waterborne primer, Standohyd, since 1993, for example. Waterborne topcoats are less established, especially in the refinish market_ In the OEM market, although Mercedes-Benz uses waterborne topcoats, Volvo has eschewed this in favour of a 2K Du Pont system, which provides more than 300 colours. Sikkens claims to have the only fully waterborne system in the UK, but admits take-up will be gradual.
