75 years ago: 14 August 1928
Under the worrying headline: "Commercial Motors to be made in India", the magazine reported that General Motors was preparing to open a new factory on the sub-continent. The plans for the Bombay plant involved an initial fixed investment and working capital of around one crore (rom) rupees.
50 years ago: 14 August 1953
Leyland Motors announced that it had secured export orders to the value of ,am so far that year. Representatives from the firm's sales and service teams had been making overseas business tours at a rate of one a week. In fact, the magazine reports, Mr D Stokes, the newly-elected director and sales manager, had made three overseas trips during that year.
25 years ago: ii August 1978
Commercial Motor reported that Tory transport spokesman Norman Fowler was pressing the government to give a firm declaration that it would accept the European Court's decision on tachographs, whichever way it went. Transport minister William Rodgers said he would wait for the decision before giving any commitment. He said he was happy to see voluntary agreements between unions and employers over their installation. He added: "If both sides believe it makes good sense, then so be it. I am quite content."
