Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

W Speed cameras could soon help detect overloaded trucks in ajoint initiative between enforcement agencies.

The Weighing In Motion System (WIMS), which detects the weight of passing vehicles with sensors in the road, is due to be launched in the UK next year.

It relies on cameras with automatic number plate recognition (ANPII) to identify trucks suspected of breaching weight restrictions.

The Vehicle & Operator Services Agency (VOSA) says teaming up with police, customs and other government agencies that already use ANPR could help cut costs, allowing more WIMS units to be installed throughout the UK.

Alan Campbell, VOSA's roadworthiness policy manager, says; "It's obviously cheaper to use someone else's data than to install the kit and maintain it yourself."

He adds that five units are likely to be in place by next summer but stresses they will not provide evidence for prosecution.

"WIMS is not that accurate. It really provides evidence of the people that are likely to be overloaded so they can than be targeted for more thorough checks."

The budget for WIMS is £500,000. A decision on whether to approach other agencies about sharing ANPE equipment will be made next month (September).
