GOVERNMENT plans to lirr the powers of local authoritii to subsidise public transpo have been attacked by the Ass ciation of Metropolitan Authoi ties.
AMA chairman Sir Jack Sma described the plans as "y another bid by the Govern me, to veto the decisions democrai cally reached in local elections.'
He said that the authoritiā¬ that have been given a clei mandate from their electoratE to face the prospect of the pol cies on which they were electe being over-ruled by a Secretar of State at Westminster.
He described this as totally ur acceptable and accused the Gor ernment of abusing the dem( cratic principles on which th British constitution is based an he pledged the AMA to contel the legislation.
