I A new system of traffic control in the :lackwall Tunnel, and on its southern pproach road, came into use on Monday.
From a control room, one police =troller keeps track of all vehicles in the win tunnels and on the approach roads and e can take over the operation of traffic ignals and signs whenever conditions make his necessary. Closed circuit cameras lonitor the approaches, which have iductive loop detectors buried under the urface. Light beam detectors in the tunnel falls maintain the surveillance.
When traffic slows or stops the controller an operate overhead signs—similar to hose on the elevated section of M4—on the pproaches. He can close either lane in the Duthbound tunnel, or switch it to two-way ,peration, in order to by-pass trouble spots.
He can close either tunnel and at the same time warn approaching traffic by illuminating signs at Woolwich Road and East India Dock Road. These signs indicate alternative routes. He also receives advance warning if any vehicle over the height limit of 13ft. 4in. attempts to enter the northbound tunnel. In the tunnels an illuminated red cross beside a lane is displayed if it is closed. A white arrow shows that the lane is open.
The system will be extended to the new northern approach road, now being built. Eventually the overhead signs will be installed on the whole 2+ miles of the southern approach road.
More than 50,000 leaflets explaining the signals are being distributed this week and other copies are available from the GLC.
