Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

L-1 A LARGE-SCALE road-safety trial of

is new dimmed-headlamp system developed by the Road Research Laboratory is planned by 42 local authorities in the Manchester area, including Stockport, Safford, Bolton, and Oldham. Starting date is October 6, and many thousands of leaflets and posters are to be used to encourage support for the campaign, *bile it understood that certain motor agents will be carrying parts for converting vehicles to the new dimming system.

Developed asi a solution to the problem of whether or not to use dipped headlamps in built-up areas, the R.R.L. system is intended to operate in such a way that, when a vehicle's sidelights are switched on, either dimmed, dipped or full-beam headlamps are also in use whenever it is moving.. In the dimmed condition the face of the headlamp shows as a non-dazzling glow.

The Laboratory has introduced the system largely as a result of the Birmingham dipped-headlamps scheme in which most of the objections were to the glare. Under the new system, sidelights are used for parkingbut as soon as the ignition key is turned (with the sidelight, still switched on) the dimmed face of the headlamp appears, so making it far easier for pedestrians and others to see an approaching vehicle without other drivers being affected by the glare associated with even dipped headlights. As soon as the main headlights are turned on the dimming systeni is cut out..

A simple change-over is not possible on vehicles with sealed ignition systems but the automatic illumination of the

dimmed headlamps (in the manner outlined above) with more common ignition systems can be reproduced with dieselengined 'vehicles by linking the dimming units with one terminal of the master switch instead of the SW terminal of an ignition coil. Diesel-engined vehicles without a master switch would have to have manual control of the dimming.

Although no change-over kit, as such, is available it is estimated that £3 would cover the fitting and material charges for a typical petrol-engined vehicle, The R.R.L. recommends the use of a Lucas (33213) or Bosch (SH/E13/2/12/2) relay and Zenith (PT1H-L/B) resistor, which reduces the wattage to about one-tenth of normal. Wiring is simplified by fitting the relay and resistor close together; the Laboratory advises the joining of one of the relay contact terminals to one end of the resistor.

Joseph Lucas Ltd. is expected to announce a complete conversion unit at the end of this year.

High Output TN the first six months of this year, I 244,957 commercial vehicles were produced in Britain, compared with 203,612 in the same period of last year. This is not quite a record, as the equivalent 1961 figure was higher.

Commercial vehicle exports in the first six months of 1964 totalled more than 89.000, which is 10 per cent higher than for the comparable period of last year-and a figure beaten only in 1961.
