Febry and Sons Ltd., of Chipping Sodbury—who, during an application to convert seven vehicles from.Contract A to open A licence, said that when his tanker business was quiet he sometimes placed flat trailers behind tractive units in place of tankers.

Mr. J. T. Aubrey Isles, managing director of Isles Ltd., commercial-vehicle engineers, of Stanningley, near Bradford, has been appointed a magistrate for the West Riding.

Mr. J. R. Turner has been appointed Wingard Ltd. representative for Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, North Staffordshire and Lincolnshire. Mr. Turner was formerly a representative with Slip Products Ltd.

Mr. J. Curran Freeman has been appointed director, international finance, of the Cummins Engine Company Inc.

Mr. J. W. Bateman has been appointed managing director of the Continental Oil Companies in Italy. Mr. Bateman was previously based in Continental's London office, where he served as director, refining and petrochemical division. Continental Oil Co. Ltd.

Mr. Frank A. Smith has been appointed vice-president (research) of the Transport Association of America. Mr. Smith has been T.A.A.'s director of research for the past nine years. Mr. Samuel-Gibbon said that it was not technically correct to use flats in place of tankers, but he did not regard the matter as a serious transgression. He eventually granted the application so far as the use of tankers was concerned.

Of course, there is a vast difference between tanker traffic and flat traffic-a different class of haulier is usually involved. If the L.A. and the objectors arc not informed of the fact that one day an artic outfit can be a tanker, and the next a flat, then they are at an obvious disadvantage. Mr. Samuel-Gibbon, in restricting the grant to tankers, was guarding the interests of general traffic operators who could not have known through /1.r and Ds that flat vehicles were involved. If Mr. Febry wants his facili-. ties to include the alternative use of flat trailers—and so take full advantage of articulation—the only way he can do so now is to seek a variation of h;s licence.

But there is no stifling of articulation here, by any stretch of imagination.

The Triplex Safety Glass Co. Ltd. has appointed Dr. Thomas Cartledge as head of the Triplex Group's research laboratory at Holly Grange, Balsall Common, near Coventry. The laboratory is responsible for basic research for the safetyglass and engineering companies of the group. Dr. Cartledge, who succeeds Mr. K. J. B. Wolfe, has for the past three years been manager of the sales technical department of Turner Brothers Asbestos Co. Ltd., of Rochdale.

Obituary

WE regret to record the deaths of M. Pierre Marchal and Mr. W. Row.

M. Marchal, who was the founder of the French Marchal automobile equipment organization, died at the age of 85. His two sons are actively engaged in the Marchal organization: Jean-Pierre, who is managing director, and Claude, responsible for special equipment operations.

Mr. Row, who was chief applications engineer of Trico-Folberth Ltd., died while on holiday in Windermere recently at the age of 58. He had served the Trico organization for 32 years in various capacities.
