CONVERTIBLE seats which start life as coach seats, and can later be modified into normal stage bus seats without any need for retrimming, will be a feature of one of the exhibits on the stand of Strachans (Coachbuilders) Ltd. at the Commercial Motor Show next month. Such seating is ideal for dual-purpose vehicles, which start life as express coaches, and are later relegated to service buses, and it is in such a vehicle— named the "Pacesetter "—that they will be fitted.
The Pacesetter is a 36 ft. by 8 ft. 21 in. dual-purpose body for mounting on either Leyland Leopard or A.E.C. Reliance chassis, and the Show model will be a B.E.T. demonstrator, incorporating the new Clayton Dewandre underfloor heating, ventilating and demisting system, developed as standard equipment for new B.E.T. single-deckers. Seating is provided for either 49 or 53 passengers. and conversion of the special seats is done by simply removing the headrolls.
Also to be shown on the Strachans stand is one of the p.a.y.e. single-deck bodies developed . originally to meet the requirements of West Hartlepool Corporation Transport, and suitable for mounting on either Leyland Leopard or A.E.C. Reliance chassis. The body is 32 ft. long by 8 ft. 21 in. wide, and seats 45 passengers, with room for 13 standing passengers, and with accommodation for luggage or push-chairs immediately behind the central exit. Alternative internal layouts can also be provided.
Strachans will also exhibit in the demonstration park a 30 ft. 21 in, by 8 ft. body mounted on a Bedford SB chassis. -Named the Pacesaver, it will be available as a 35/41-seater, and on the 35or 39-seat versions the double seat to the left of the driver's cab will be replaced by a 15-cu.-ft. luggage container.
