FURNITURE dealer should not be I. expected to go to his competitor fornsport, said Mr. S. W. Nelson, irthern Licensing Authority, at -weastle7on-Tyne, on Monday. He tilted a B licence to Messrs. Bone and ittain, of North Shields, to operate a on van for the carriage of " small :ces of furniture for customers when iv furniture is being delivered."
The applicants said that they were quently asked by customers, when rchasing new furniture, to collect !ond-hand furniture from other places delivery with the new consignment. ey had been .doing this work free of arge to oblige their .customers, but
thought that some payment should made.
They originally applied for " furni-e and general household goods, any tance," to which the Railway Exects
tive, Road Haulage Executive, Messrs. Bainbridge. and Son, of North Shields, and Messrs. Turner Bros., Whitley Bay, objected.
Both Messrs. Bainbridge and Messrs. Turner said that they had vehicles available, but Mr. Nelson did not think it reasonable that the applicants should have to ask competitors to do, the work. If customers were referred for transport to Messrs. Bone and Brittain's rivals, they might buy their new furniture from them as well.
