DIFFICULTIES experienced through the serious decline in the volume of traffic handled by road transport were discussed when the Standing Joint Committee recently met and its general purposes committee is to deal with the matter as one of urgency. An approach is likely to be made to the Minister of War Transport and, in particular, such problems as priority for A-licence holders, vehicles operated by Government department and allocation between road and rail, will be covered.

ACCORDING to Mr Noel-Baker, there is nothing to prevent any number of persons up to four f-om arranging between themselves to share a taxi-cab and to divide the fare, provided the arrarigemen' is not initiated by the driver or owner of the cab, and provided that the journey is not made frequently, or as a matter of routine

This clarification of the position was made in Parliament last week, in reply to a Member who asked that he joint use of taxi-cabs might be facilitated as a . measure to promote economic transport.

REDUCTION OF LIQUID FUELS FOR HEATING

O(-IF interest to those concerned in the of works and offices is the news that the Petroleum Board has been instructed by the Government to reduce the supply of liquid fuel (other than paraffin or petrol) used for central heating and domestic purposes.

Consumers must not attempt to transfer to other fuels, such as cqp.1, coke, gas, or electricity, as these will not he made available for such purpose. The main fuels actually concerned in the reduction .are fuel oil gas oil, Diesel oil, creosote and creosote pitch.
