Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Lorry and Trailer Ton-mileage.

The Editor, THE COMMERCIAL MOTOR.

' [21011 Sir,—We note in your issue of July 24th, an editorial regarding the fuel efficiency of tractorlorries, in which you deprecate statements to the effect that tractor-lorries can accomplish over 100 ton-miles to the gallon.

As to the tractor-lorry, we leave the makers of this to speak for themselves, but such a performance is obtainable by the use of the Saurer lorry and trailer. We enclose particulars [reproduced. herewith.— EDT which showsome results obtained by us over two years ago in which from 100 to 103 ton-miles per

gallon were obtained. This is a statement of fact, and is-not a matter of surmise.—Yours faithfully, For the SAIIRER COMMERCIAL 'VEHICLE CO., LTD., RALPH E. WILSON, Sales. Manager.

Paraffin Carburetters.

The Editor, THE COMMERCIAL MOTOR.

[2192] Sir,—I was very pleased to see by your latest issue that there is still some interest in the use of paraffin for commercial vehicles.

As you are aware, I was one of the first to supply a carburetter for this purpose and are still as enthusiastic as ever. I think I can say what few paraffin carburetter makers can, that I have supplied 2,000 paraffin carburetters to one type of Vehicle. I have considerably improved the paraffin carburetter during the past font years, and have now bought the patents back from the company and licensee who previously handled them, in order to manufacture it at our new works and put it on the market.

I have introduced some entirely new features in this carburetter, and. we are able to sell it with a guarantee that it will save half the fuel cost and give an increase of power over petrol ; in fact, we have obtained results as low as .4 lb. of paraffin per b.h.p. with a 4i-in. by 5i-in, overhead-valve engine. _ I am enclosing a rough chart [not reproduced.— ED.] showing comparisons of it with several other makes of carburetter and taken by the Wallis Coin America.—Yours THE HALLIDAY ENGINEERING CO.: LTD.,

Croydon. THOMAS E. HALLIDAY.
