Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

T read with interest your 1 article regarding wheel loss (CM 24-30 March). While it is good to see that much research has and is being done in this area, it is my experience that not enough thought has gone into providing the operator with quality wheel braces.

I tried but failed to acquire any wheel braces that were suitable for the job intended, that is checking wheel nuts out on the road. This is despite each item on offer proudly displaying a BSI mark hailing their quality My findings were that not only were these items useless, but downright dangerous.

While it is true to say I was pretty disgusted at some of the wheel braces offered I do feel that the problem is made worse by the fact that where you have wheel nuts with collars you lose 25% to 30% power for the wheel brace to grip the nuts.

For all that has been said and done in regard to wheel loss this problem seems not to have been addressed.

Not for one minute would I suggest this is the cause, or the answer to the problem, but surely anything that helps keep the nuts tight must go a long way to eliminating the problem. Peter Harrison Keighley, West Yorkshire
