• Royal Mail has opened a £600,000 workshop at Dunton near Basildon to maintain a fleet of 375 vehicles based at sites around Essex.
• A Leyland DAF iHy, franchise has been bought by Ryland Rover, formerly Baldwins of Warrington. The company will also serve Runcorn and Wigan.
• Six road transport cornponies went into receivership in March, according to figures compiled by accountants Touche Ross. Year-todate company failures in road transport are running at a similar level to last year.
• Last year's introduction of the £5,000 VED rate for 2+2 combinations running at 35 tonnes deterred most operators—only 1 2 took up the offer. The RHA says this is probably because hauliers concluded they would be unable to claw back the money from clients.
