Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Business is booming for own-account hauliers, with most running their fleets at full capacity and half expecting to move more freight in 1988 than they did last year.

Fewer operators need to carry for third parties or take on smaller hauliers to subcontract. One reason for this is that own-account operators are more confident and are buying more trucks as the market becomes buoyant, says a new survey by the Freight Transport Association.

The study, of 300 fleet operators, shows that 46% expect to move more goods in the first six months of this year than in the last six months of 1987. Growth in the economy is tailing off, but freight movements continue to grow.
