• The tanker driver in last October's M61 smash which killed 13 people has been sent for trial at Preston Crown Court, accused of causing death by reckless driving. David Dawson, 24, who drives for Manchesterbased Lanstar Petroleum, was committed to the Crown Court by the Leyland magistrates on two specimen charges.

• Jack Parker, Senior vice-president of the Institution of Highways and Transportation, has been appointed chief highway engineer at the Department of Transport. The appointment, which starts in July, will be for three years, extendible to five, • York Thermostar's new reefer-building factory at Harelaw, County Durham, was opened by Transport Minister Peter Bottomley on Tuesday 12 April.
