N EWCASTLE BYPASS GETS £23 MILLION

• The Newcastle western bypass scheme is to receive a £23m award from the European Regional Development Fund in the largest ever single grant it has made for an individual project in England.

Peter Bottomley, Minister for Roads and Traffic, announced the award during a visit to Newcastle for the Regional Annual Transport Consultative Committee meeting, last week.

The £88m Newcastle Western Bypass has been recognised as one of the most important schemes in the national roads programme and will provide Mims of dual carriageway, from the Gateshead Western Bypass in the south to the A6125 and Al north of Gosforth.

This new road will become the Al and connect up with the important truck roads to the south, west and north of Newcastle and Gateshead, as well as providing traffic relief for Low Fell, Gateshead, Newcastle and Gosforth.
