• United Carriers, the express parcels division of transport and manufacturing group Bunzl, is on target to make a profit this year, after a disappointing 1987.
Bunzl, which last week reported record pre-tax profits of 285.7 million, merged United Carriers with sister companies Sovereign Distribution, Atlas Express and Multifreight in December.
United Carriers launched a 48-hour service last week and plans a high-speed European operation. Although sales are lower than expected, the reorganisation is going well, says Allan Rinks, Bunzl's managing director of transport services.
Bunzl owns several road transport operators, including Robsons Distribution, parcels carrier Ripponden Motors, textile carriers Scorpio and Hudson Shepherd, and trailer operators Mannsped and Thompson Jewitt. It has also bought manufacturers York Trailer and Abel Demountables, and owns shipping agent Mann Group.
