• As revealed in last week's Commercial Motor, ERF has become the first UK truck manufacturer to fit the latest LTAA10-325 air-to-air chargecooled version of the Cummins 10-litre engine, using it in five of its E-series heavy trucks.
The new vehicles — designated E10.32 and bearing the intercooled badge — comprise 38-tonne GCW-rated 4x2, 6x2 twin-steer and 6x4 double-drive tractive units and eight-wheeled tipper and general haulage chassis, with a 4x2 rigid for drawbar applications.
Installed, the LTAA10-325 engine produces 227kW (304hp) at 2,100rpm, with peak torque of 1,265Nm (9331bft) at 1,300rpm. Both figures are nett to EEC80/1269.
The air-to-air charge-cooled LIO has a 17% torque rise with a high, flat profile torque curve and a claimed fuel efficiency of 194g/kW/hr at its gross rated speeds.
In standard sleeper cab trim, all five new LTAA10-325engined models feature the Eaton TS012612 Twin Splitter gearbox, Spicer clutch and Rockwell drive axles. Typical kerb weights of the 4x2, 6x2 and 6x 4 tractive units in bare chassis form are 5,775,6,770 and 7,250kg respectively on thier 3.2m, 3.8m and 3.36m wheelbases, including oil and water, but not fuel, fifth wheel, spare wheel carrier, mudwings or a driver.
These models retail at £36,750, £42,075 and £44,975. An eight-wheeled tipper chassis on a 5.89m wheelbase weighs in at 8,597kg and costs 249,090, while the 4x2 rigid for drawbar application is listed at 238,660.
Day cabs cost £1,000 less in each case and the Eaton SAMT option adds a further £2,495 to the retail prices.
ERF will supply the new Cummins-engined E-series trucks from May or June; its Sandbach neighbour, Foden also intends to add the LTAA10-325 to an already wide range of engine options and Seddon Atkinson is considering it too. It will probably use the engine in its new heavy truck range, due to be announced later this year.
