THE NOTORIOUS flyover at the Army and Navy roundabout on Al2 at Chelmsford has had to be closed several times because of ice. To avoid this inconvenience a sacrificial policeman has to be offered up to placate the winter.
His job is to drive back and forth across the bridge in the small hours to work in the salt and thaw the ice. If in doing so he puts the copper in cropper, it's all part of the service.
