GARY TURVEY, the Freight Transport Association's new director-general, has given lorry drivers a timely warning that they are on probation. Now that speed limits are realistic, they must be strictly observed, he says.
To claim that 50mph really means 60mph or more would destroy the road transport industry's credibility and play into the hands of its many detractors. Lorry drivers have probably never been more unpopular than they are now. Only they can improve their reputations.
Although Gary succeeded Hugh Featherstone on All Fool's Day, he was not joking. It was also Mothering Sunday and, remember, Mother knows best.
