Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE NEWS this week that the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders is to launch a Vhm campaign to project the image of the industry merits widespread acclaim. At long last the industry will present itself to the public in a positive manner rather than merely defend when under attack.

It would be uncharacteristic if we were not to claim some little credit in this affair. For although the SM MT has been considering the move for many years, its deliberations took on a new degree of urgency after we surveyed the industry on the value of a campaign.

CM has promised its support to the SMMT. We have one reservation — is £1/2m enough for such a venture?

At the same time as this information came the Road Haulage Association's programme for its annual conference. A fine array of talented orators has been engaged for the week long event: Peter Capon, Sir James Duncan, Ken Livingstone, Lynda Chalker are all speakers worth listening to and debate seems assured.

However, we ask again as we did last year, why take this galaxy of talent abroad? Might not the conference attract twice as many delegates at an industrial venue in b main ( There is no doubt that it would attract much more media coverage if the venue was here.

A well-publicised British event would get to the general public and would have complemented SMMT's campaign and the British motor show. This we see as a lost opportunity, yet again.
