Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The use of a new two-component polyurethane paint based on a Bayer produced system of protective coatings has reduced maintenance costs in the running of a fleet of 70 Manchester-based tankers ranging from 1000gal capacity to 4600 owned by Waste Clearance Ltd and Manchester Tankers Ltd, members of the Waste (Holdings) Ltd group of companies. At their headquarters at Tyldesley, near Manchester, Mr D. B. Allen, fleet engineer, told CM that the Bayer DesmodurDesmophen (DD) system of protective coatings in the distinctive orange, black and white of the firm's tankers had commenced some two years ago. Previously these had been painted with traditional coach enamels and an idea of the savings in maintenance could be readily seen in the fact that prior to the changeover the finish often came off the vehicle after only 24 hours service and became permanently discoloured within a few weeks. With the DD based polyurethane, Mr Allen says hosing down is all that is required to restore a vehicle to its clean and glossy condition. Colour fade and the danger of corrosion has been eliminated.

Both Manchester Tankers and Waste Clearance Ltd have used the paint on all their tankers. It is supplied in two packs, one containing the Desmophen ponent ready mixed for application am other the Desmodur component whit the harder. In use, the contents of packs are thoroughly mixed together ); the polyurethane paint must be ap within 24 hours. Before mixing, how the packs can be stored indefinitely.

Corrosion resistance was the i reason why the firm decided to use paint. Further savings have been mac the short time needed to apply it. claimed that a tanker can be painted bl man in three days, whereas the best round when using cellulose or enarr six to seven days. The shorter spy time is achieved because a good fmist be obtained without a complete prelim rub-down. Quick drying is another saver and a second coat • can be ap within an hour of the first when temperature is 10 deiC or above. The taken to paint a vehicle is also fu reduced by the facility to spray in sequence. Masking no longer prese. problem and tape can be applied and off a painted surface within about an of application without damaging the ing.

A hose-down after transporting dirty loads is all that is required to res vehicle to its former bright and appearance — a bonus for an op proud of a reputation for fleet smartnt
