Crash Tender for Aerodrome Use

Built for the Air Ministry, an Interesting Type of Crossley Vehicle which Can Operate Under

Difficult Conditions AN accompanying illustration shows a Crossley aerodrome-crash fire tender, a number of which has been supplied to the Air Ministry. The vehicle is fully equipped to deal with fires which may result from an accident or bad landing, and to rescue the personnel involved. It is further ready for use in dealing with any outbreak which may occur in hangars, workshops, etc., on the aerodrome.

The chassis is a Crossley 30-100 h.p. six-wheeler, specially designed for the work. It has high maximum speed with exceptionally good acceleration. The engine is a Crossley four-cylindered e42

petrol unit of 415g-in. bore and 51-in-. stroke. •It is rated at 29.8 h.p. and develops 100 b.h.p. The vehicle has an excellent cross-country performance and is fitted with an auxiliary gearbox, giving a range of eight forward speeds, for use under extreme conditions.

On the chassis is mounted an Airfoam pump, which is driven by a power takeoff from the gearbox and is capable of delivering upwards of 1,000 g.p.m. A composite tank containing 300 gallons of water and 30 gallons of foam solution is provided to feed the pump, which will give a minimum of four minutes running. To the two pump outlets are connected copper pipes conveying the foam to the centre of the crew's quarters, to the end of each of which a dividing breaching is attached, thus providing a total of four deliveries. To each of these permanent outlets are attached 65 ft. of specially treated unlined-canvas hose and a branch-pipe together with a special spreader nozzle.

Sufficient space is provided for a crew of six, comprising driver, four hosemen and one rescue man. Equipment includes asbestos suit, felling axe, salvage hooks, flame-proof gloves and similar accessories.
