• The M40 is to open early despite problems caused by surface cracking which is costing £18m to repair.
The cracks opened up on the Gaydon to Warwick stretch which is now under repair. Nonetheless the Department of Transport expects the motorway to be fully operational at the turn of the year, months earlier than the original target date of spring 1991.
The Dip says that the contractors employed on the project have all agreed to speed up their contracts in order to meet the new date.
