• About 20 drivers will be made redundant at Go-Ahead Northern this month when the Tyne & Wear-based operator closes two of its 13 depots.
All of the redundancies will be at the Jarrow depot, which was threatened with closure in May when staff would not accept local pay and condition negotiations (CM 31 May-6 June).
The rest of the 150 drivers at Jarrow and High Spen, the other site to be closed, will be transferred to other depots. Last month 1,500 drivers at Go-Ahead voted to accept local negotiations to avoid 350 job cuts.
All drivers at Jarrow and High Spen were offered transfers, according to operations manager Alex Nelson, who says about 10 drivers are still needed for the South Shields depot. He says the closures are necessary to ensure the remaining depots are working at full capacity.
