• British Rail is considering the launch of a modified domestic wagonload service from the ashes of Speedlink, which is scheduled to be killed off by Railfreight Distribution (CM 7-13 June).
The possibility of another groupage service, under a new brand name, has been mooted by British Rail at a meeting with the Freight Transport Association and current Speedlink customers, and BR is reportedly talking to the private sector about funding for the venture. It is thought the scheme would provide a way out for most current Speedlink users, but customers using the service for very small volumes may not be catered for.
FTA distribution co-ordinator David Mitchell says BR is preparing criteria for potential users of the new freight service, which will be of help to members who are Speedlink users. Mitchell is confident that "we will not be seeing a disappearance of a wagonload service the signs are looking better."
Neither Railfreight Distribution nor the Railfreight Users' Group was available for comment as CM went to press.
